Copenhagen Pavillon

Old Italian plazas are surrounded by facades on every side. The streets leading to a square are orientated in different angles, so there is no big axis that crosses the square. The city hall square of Copenhagen is the great opposite to the Italian plaza. Open to every side, surrounded by noisy streets. No facades that protect the space or create a “circle´s centre”.
Today the northern party of the square is surrounded by a wall that is hiding a construction site. By not seeing what is happening inside, the feeling of a quiet and calm space arises. The design is inspired by this potential quality inside this wall. A structure that surrounds a space and forms a midpoint. An enclosing wall for the square, colonnade that acts as a buffer zone, that on the one hand separates two spaces and on the other provides protection and a place to rest. Modules will be arranged at the intersection of the square and the streets.

Arches will mark the entrance and connect the modules with platforms to linger and curtains for protection. People are able to shape their space by moving the arches, so the curtains will create an intimate space. So to say a smaller square within the square.
