to climb
The courtyard of Christinenstraße 18 in Berlin, Prenzlauer Berg is surrounded by an old liqueur factory and and an entirely closed party wall. In order to enable an accessable roof space at the Pfefferberg in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg, this party wall shall be enhanced as a public staircase.
Thinking of the verb ‘to climb’, I first imagined people standing in front of an obstacle, that they cannot manage. To solve the problem, they could help themselves by climbing on each other to get to their needs. So the principle of a collective, where every part is stabilizing the other, got the main idea of my project. The moveable construction can react on different times of the day. The ladder opens during the day and is closed by night.
