Extension Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee

The existing urban fabric at the university location in Berlin-Weissensee is an assembly of residential development, office buildings, the university structure as well as parking spots and allotments.

This heterogeneity must be brought into contact at the transitions in order to achieve spatial mixing. Today‘s quality at the art school is characterized by qualitative courtyards between the existing buildings. Maintaining this special characteristic, but defining the urban space as a thresholdless area is the central concept of the design.

The Weißensee university location is defined as a public space that is divided into different areas by the element of the wall. These structures interweave the existing and public areas of the streets, parking areas and allotments. The result is a wide variety of spatial relations that continue in four volumes on the sides and expand the urban space into the vertical. The emerging Campus Weissensee combines the formerly different locations of the school in one quarter. It tries to connect with the surroundings at the new buildings trough the various uses and therefore becomes an open and multi-layered quarter.
